In 2024, Shutong Fan created a series of microscopic photographs of works from the UMUMOBJECTS collection. Using a device that magnifies surfaces around thirty times, objects originally made to be held and used, aged Japanese aka-e ware, cast glass, ceramics by Masayo Yamamoto, and vessels by Shuhei Narita, are transformed into images that almost lose any sense of scale. Shapes, function, and origin dissolve, leaving fields of colour, cracks, pores, and subtle glaze undulations. Hovering between figuration and abstraction, the series questions conventional exhibition practices, redirecting attention to material surfaces and the traces of time they bear.
